Measure twice
Record OEM suspension clearance at the strut, frame, and fender before ordering wheels. Enter those measurements when comparing inner/outer change.
Account for tire bulge
Add ~0.2" (5 mm) per side to cover tire sidewall bulge. This keeps the math conservative for real-world fitment.
Use the chart below
Cross-reference your target backspacing to see the resulting offset in mm. Highlight combinations that keep scrub radius in check.

Offset and backspacing refresher
Offset (mm)
Distance between the wheel mounting pad and centerline. Positive offset tucks the wheel inward, negative offset pushes it outward.
Backspacing (in)
Distance from the hub mounting pad to the inner rim lip. Increasing backspacing pulls the wheel inward toward suspension components.
Conversion shortcut
Offset ≈ (Backspacing − (Wheel Width + 1)/2) × 25.4. The extra inch accounts for the outer lips that wheel manufacturers do not include in width specs.
Speedometer tie-in
Offset changes often happen alongside new tire diameters. Pair this page with the Speedometer Calibration tool to see exact MPH impact.
How to plan an offset change
Start with your OEM specs. Note wheel width, offset, and tire size from the door jamb or build sheet. Enter those numbers on the left side of the calculator. Next, add the aftermarket wheel width, target offset, and tire profile you are planning. The visualization highlights the exact millimeters gained or lost on both the inner and outer edges.
Use the results to confirm you still clear sway bars, spring perches, and fender liners. Cross-reference with the Interference Checker to account for suspension travel, then head to the Load Safety Validator if your new tire size changes load index or speed rating.
When to adjust offset
- Big brake kits: often need lower offset wheels to clear calipers. Verify piston housings will not contact spokes.
- Wider tires: adding section width may require higher offset to avoid fender poke, or lower offset to avoid strut rub depending on the platform.
- Lifted trucks: negative offsets widen stance for stability but can overload bearings. Keep the tooltips in the calculator within ±5 mm of factory when possible.
- Staggered setups: sports cars typically stagger offsets front to rear. Run the calculator for each axle to keep fitment symmetric.

How do I measure current clearance?+
Park on level ground, turn the steering wheel to full lock, and measure from the tire shoulder to struts, control arms, and fender liners. Record inner and outer distances separately and reference them while using the visualizer.
Can I enter wheel spacers or adapters?+
Yes. Add the spacer thickness to the new wheel offset value so the calculator reflects the true mounting position. The visualization will show how spacers push the wheel outward and reduce inner clearance.
What happens when I change wheel width but not offset?+
Wheel width adds half the extra width inward and half outward. The visualizer automatically splits the change so you can see whether the added width will hit suspension parts or fenders.
How does offset relate to scrub radius?+
More positive offset pulls the tire inward and usually increases scrub radius on McPherson strut cars, while negative offset decreases it. Use the Speedometer & Handling notes in the UI to keep steering feedback predictable.
Do I need an alignment after changing offset?+
Any wheel or tire swap warrants an alignment check. Offset changes shift track width and can alter toe or camber, so plan to visit an alignment shop immediately after installing the new setup.
